Judges meet with a team member from Hoosic Valley at the 2018 Tournament at Rensselaer City School District

The 2018 Region 4 Odyssey of the Mind tournament is scheduled for March 9, 2018 at Coxsackie-Athens Central School. While the date may seem far off, volunteer recruiting begins now! There are many opportunities to volunteer to help the day run smoothly – registration, door keepers, merchandise sales and more. Opportunities are available for a few hours, the full day of the tournament and more.

There is also a need for judges for each of the problems teams will solve that day.

Signing up to be a judge does require a small amount of training. Judges must attend the training session January 26, 2019 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. (for new judges) or 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (for returning judges) at Capital Region BOCES in Albany.

Thanks to the time our volunteers give, Odyssey of the Mind is able to offer creative problem-solving opportunities that develop the great minds of our future.

“Odyssey of the Mind Tournaments would not happen without help from our judges and volunteers.  Judges and volunteers have the opportunity to see student creativity and problem solving at its best and participate at a fun and exciting learning event,” said Odyssey Regional Director Kerrie Burch.

Since 2007, more than 25 teams from Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene Counties have advanced to the world finals. At least one team has advanced each year, including 13 in the past five years alone, with three advancing in 2016, one in 2017, and five in 2018.Teams must offer original and creative solutions to open-ended problems in less than eight minutes. One of this year’s problems involves telling the story of a long-forgotten emoji. Volunteer judges will score the team for creativity. You can see all six problems teams can choose here.
