What to do in an Emergency

FIRE:
  1. Upon discovery or detection of smoke or a fire, activate the building's fire alarm. Familiarize yourself with the location of this alarm.
  2. Notify the fire department, or ensure that someone in your building has already done so.
  3. Depending on your job responsibilities, you may be asked to:
    1. Assist students in evacuation.
    2. Assist co-workers or visitors in evacuation.

Remember that our first responsibility is to ensure that students, staff, and visitors are in a safe location and accounted for. Employees are not expected to fight fires.

Attempt to use a portable fire extinguisher only if:

  • the fire alarm has been activated;
  • evacuation is taking place;
  • you have been trained in fire extinguisher use;
  • the fire is small, not spreading, and you are not in danger.

If you use a fire extinguisher, use the PASS technique:

  • P - Pull the pin on the extinguisher.
  • A - Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
  • S - Squeeze the handles together.
  • S - Sweep back and forth across the base of the fire.
OTHER EMERGENCIES:

In the event of other emergencies (e.g., bomb threat, chemical spill, personal injury, threatening weather):

If you discover the emergency, contact your building administrator (or call a Central Office administrator) immediately. The building's Emergency Management Plan will provide guidance for these and other related situations. Be prepared to provide the administrator with the following information:

  • the nature of the emergency;
  • where it is occurring;
  • where it started;
  • who is involved;
  • if anyone is injured or in danger.
