For the 2025 Uniform Code, there will be a transition period from October 1 to December 30, 2025, during which applicants may choose to comply with either the 2020 or 2025 Uniform Code.
The 2025 Energy Code will become effective December 31, 2025, but no transition period will be provided. In addition, amendments to 19 NYCRR Part 1240 will include Part 1240.6 Fossil-Fuel Equipment and Building Systems, which—with limited exceptions—will prohibit the installation of fossil-fuel equipment and building systems in new buildings starting on the effective date.
There will be no grace period after December 30, 2025. All projects submitted or postmarked after that date must comply with the 2025 Code.
SED’s Office of Facilities Planning plans to release a document outlining significant code changes affecting school design and construction later this month and we will provide a link to this document once available.
