The Questar III BOCES Agriculture Studies program at Marilyn A. Noonan School at Durham has grown over the past 6 months. Launched in the Fall of 2022, the program prepares students for a career in agriculture. Through a blend of hands-on learning and classroom instruction, the program covers a wide range of topics, including animal science, plant science, soil and water management, agribusiness, and more. Students also have an opportunity to join the school’s Future Farmer of America (FFA) chapter where they can network with like-minded students, strengthen their personal skills, and become a leader.
With help from the school’s Heavy Equipment Maintenance and Operation students who prepared the grounds, Ag students built and planted a beautiful community garden behind the school last spring. Students planted various vegetables and flowers, with staff and students stopping in throughout the summer to water, care for, and pick vegetables to bring home. The garden is still flourishing this September.
Last June, the Ag program received several new outdoor structures, including animal sheds, a chicken coop, and a rabbit hutch. The sheds were built by Construction Technologies students at Donald R. Kline Technical School. Over the summer, fences were installed in preparation for animals.
This week, outdoor animals were welcomed to Marilyn A. Noonan School at Durham. Four goats, two bunnies, and several chickens are now being cared for by students, with additional animals coming soon. We are excited to watch this program grow as we continue creating new opportunities for our students. Juniors interested in attending this two year program should speak to their counselor for more information.
