Students will earn a minimum of 200 hours of paid, on the job training.

This spring, Questar III BOCES matched 29 students with 24 local businesses as part of their Youth Apprenticeship Program. This program allows students to earn a minimum of 200 hours of paid, on the job training the summer between their junior and senior year. It’s also an opportunity to network with potential post-graduation employers while showcasing their skills, professionalism, and dedication to their trade.

This program is open to Automotive Technology, Construction Technology, Electrical Trades, Heavy Equipment Operations and Maintenance, HVAC, and Welding students. Students must be in good standing in their program and participate in an application and interview process.

Since the program’s inception in 2021, 118 students have participated in the program with 56 different businesses across 5 counties. Many students exceed the required 200 hours and stay on for employment through their senior year and/or post graduation. Many businesses return year after year, seeing this program as a pipeline for young, driven employees who are eager to learn, work, and succeed.

Congratulations to the students and businesses participating in the 2025 Youth Apprenticeship Program:

Kline Technical School: Liza Dwon (Fire Science Instructor), Daniel Dugan (Cairo-Durham CSD & Cairo Fire Department), Jesse-James Brough (Greenville CSD & Greenville Volunteer Fire Company), Evan McCord (Pine Plains CSD & Livingston Pumper Co #1), Ethan Ravenscroft (Coxsackie-Athens CSD and Athens Vol. Fire Department). Maggie Palmeri (Questar III BOCES Director of CTE), Madisyn Werner (Greenville CSD & Greenville Volunteer Fire Company), Greg Fox (Fire Science Instructor), and Dr. Gladys Cruz (Questar III BOCES District Superintendent).

On May 9, 2025, nearly sixty guests, including eight local fire departments, participated in a “Firetruck Wetdown” with Questar III BOCES at Donald R. Kline Technical School. A Wetdown is a ceremonial tradition where firefighters from neighboring companies christen a new apparatus by spraying it with water. The firetruck was graciously donated to the Questar III BOCES Fire Science program by the Gloversville Fire Department and City of Gloversville, NY, earlier this year. Scroll to the end to watch a video from the event.

A collaborative effort with Columbia and Greene Counties, the Fire Science program launched in September 2024. This program allows students to earn their New York State Basic Exterior Firefighter Operations (BEFO) certification, a firefighter’s first step in their lifelong training as a volunteer or paid firefighter. By taking this program, a student does not have to take the same course on their own time, typically on nights and weekends. The program also assists local departments where students volunteer with daily, concentrated training, giving students more skills and confidence, removing some basic training needs from the department.

“This program is more than just an educational opportunity; it’s an investment in the future of our communities,” said Questar III BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Gladys Cruz. “By providing students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed as firefighters, we are helping to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents for years to come.”

The Questar III BOCES firetruck being sprayed down by neighboring companies.

On May 6. 2025, more than forty Questar III BOCES Career and Technical Education students participated in the SkillsUSA National Signing Day, a nationwide celebration of the next generation of skilled professionals and the skilled career paths that strengthen our country.

These seniors were joined by Questar III staff, family, friends, and future employers as they signed a letter of intent to pursue skilled career paths following graduation. These students have already secured post-graduation employment or have committed to continuing their education in their desired field.

“The SkillsUSA National Signing Day is a powerful reminder that success takes many forms,” shared Questar III BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Glady Cruz. “We are proud of our students who have committed to a career in the skilled trades, filling essential roles within our communities. This event is more than a signing – it’s a celebration of their hard work, dedication, and the bright futures they’re bringing.”

Congratulations to our students!
