In what has become an annual summer tradition, last month Questar III BOCES partnered with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Hudson Valley Community College to host 24 seventh and eighth-grade students from Lansingburgh Central School District and Troy City School District for a week-long STEM camp at the Questar III & HVCC STEM High School at Hudson Valley Community College.
For the past three years, students attending the half-day camp have participated in a variety of fun, hands-on activities involving science, technology, engineering, and math. This summer, camp counselors introduced new project activities, including exploring the relationship between an asteroid’s structure and its impact on lunar surfaces, designing and testing models of prosthetic limbs, and examining how medications chemically react to affect the human body positively.
Throughout the week, students worked in teams, honing essential skills like communication, problem-solving, and creativity—all critical for success in today’s workplace. At the end of the week, parents were invited to attend group presentations at HVCC’s Bulmer Telecommunications Center to see the results of their campers’ efforts.
“My son had a great experience at the Questar III & HVCC STEM High School Summer Camp sponsored by Regeneron—each day featured an in-depth exploration of a different STEM discipline. I highly recommend this experience to students interested in guiding their high school interests and future career paths,” said Elaine Garrett, a parent of one of the camp students. “The fact that it’s supported by our area’s educational partners and STEM industry leaders who value STEM outreach makes it an even more exciting opportunity for our kids.”
“We enjoyed working with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Hudson Valley Community College to provide students from Lansingburgh and Troy with a week-long camp at the Questar III & HVCC STEM High School. This was a wonderful opportunity to provide students with summer learning and enrichment while opening their eyes to the possibilities that exist locally within STEM,” said Dr. Gladys Cruz, District Superintendent of Questar III BOCES.
