There’s a saying in career development theory that the best way to achieve career success is to “find what you love to do and get someone to pay you to do it.” These two girls have no shortage of excitement and enthusiasm for what they are doing in their Career Technical Education programs. Meet Skyyler Hemming and Katelynn Keeler, two juniors who happen to be best friends who have found something they both love.

Skyyler is a junior at Brunswick Central School District and is enrolled in her first year of HVAC. Katie is a junior at Berlin Central School District and is enrolled in her first year of Information Technology. Both girls share that they gave it no thought when considering their career programs that they might be the only one or one of two girls in a predominately male oriented career field. In fact, both hardly even noticed because as they so eloquently state, “we’re just part of the class, part of the family.”

It is exciting to see girls so interested and passionate about what they do in school that they want to share their enthusiasm with other girls considering non traditional career pathways. As Skyyler says, “just go for it!”

Special thanks to Rensselaer City School District senior CTE Information Technology student Sean Gillan for editing the video. Great job and a big thank you to all three students.
