The application window is open for Excelsior Scholarships for the Fall 2019 semester. The scholarship, managed by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation, allows students attending SUNY or CUNY schools whose families make less than $110,000/year to pursue an associates or bachelor’s degree tuition free, in combination with other financial aid programs. Applications must be submitted by July 23, 2018.
Those receiving the scholarship may receive up to $5,500. The award amount is determined by the resident tuition rate charged by SUNY ($6,470) or CUNY ($6,330), reduced by the amount of other financial aid the student will receive for the academic year, including a NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) award or federal Pell grant. The Excelsior Scholarship will then be applied to cover any remaining tuition up to $5,500, and a tuition credit will cover any tuition expenses not covered by the scholarship. The Excelsior Scholarship covers tuition only, and does not cover books, room and board, and college fees.
Students receiving the scholarship must reside in and be employed (if working) in New York State for the number of years the student received the scholarship. If the student does not meet this residency requirement, the scholarship will revert to a no-interest loan which is required to be paid back.
