As is normal for the end of the school year, our Special Education programs closed out the year by recognizing student achievements and accomplishments with a variety of graduations, moving-up ceremonies, and award presentations.

Graduates seated at the Academy at REC graduationOn June 9, staff recognized graduates of the Academy at Rensselaer Educational Center. The Academy began in the fall with the goal of allowing more special education students the opportunity to take part in a Career Studies or Career & Technical Education program. Six students were honored for their work and awarded their diplomas. The ceremony also included a slideshow of photos throughout the course of the year. Click here for more photos.

In the ceremony at Green Meadow Elementary School, Principal Karen Brockley and teachers Joal Bova and Christine Carioto delivered remarks praising the graduates for their dedication and hard work and offering advice and wisdom as they move on to the next phase of their lives. Students at Rensselaer Academy were recognized for a wide array of accomplishments at their annual awards ceremony June 13 at Rensselaer City School District. 56 students received awards for academics, behavior, improvement, and attendance. One student graduated, and 10 students are either returning to their home district or transitioning to the Academy at Rensselaer Educational Center. (Photos to come)

Student poses with teachers at graduation at Ichabod CraneOn June 16, four students from Beth St. Clair-Bedell’s AIM class at Ichabod Crane High School received their diplomas. he class also received awards in recognition for their 140 hours of community service to the BackPack Program at Ichabod Crane Primary School, Teen Weekend Meal Program at Ichabod Crane High School and Barnwell Nursing Home. Students were also presented with STEM awards for their work with Cornell Cooperative Extension Columbia and Mud Creek Environmental Learning Center. Click here for more photos.

Student receives an award at George Washington SchoolAt George Washington School, students celebrated their achievements on June 19. Awards were given for creativity, citizenship, friendship, helpfulness, academics and more. Principal Chris Martel was also presented a class photo as a token of appreciation as he takes on a new assignment at the Academy at Rensselaer Educational Center beginning in September. Sarah's Sister graduate poses with teacher at graduationOn June 20, three students graduated from the Sarah’s Sisters program located at the Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy. This program provides unique educational and community experiences for students aged 18-21 with special needs who have completed their high school coursework. Special Education Director Robin Sobol was featured as a guest speaker at the ceremony. Click here for more photos.

Students in Dawn McGowan’s Questar III class at Maple Hill Middle School ended their year with a moving-up ceremony. Five students from Dawn McGowan’s class will move on to Sackett Educational Center, and one student will transition to Questar III’s program at Columbia High School in East Greenbush.
