Questar III’s new professional development program for new or aspiring superintendents kicks off next month with a session on Superintendent and Board Relations on October 12.

Dimensions of the Superintendency was developed in conjunction with Questar III’s Superintendent Success Network through conversations with sitting superintendents about the need to develop the capacity of those who are new to the position or those who are looking to become superintendents.

District Superintendent Dr. Gladys I. Cruz says it is likely our region will see significant leadership changes at the district level over the next several years, and it is beneficial for all to begin supporting those who are aspiring to the superintendency.

In fact, a recent survey by the New York State Council of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS) showed that a number of respondents (63 percent) expected to retire in the next three years. Additionally, respondents to the 9th Triennial Study of the Superintendency in New York State Snapshot indicated that they were hired because the board wanted a leader with this experience.

This program will provide new or aspiring leaders in Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene counties with the opportunity to learn directly from veteran superintendents such as Dr. John Yagielski and Lee Bordick.

Future sessions will cover a range of topics identified by current superintendents through a survey of skills and knowledge that people going into the superintendency need to have or be aware of.

The program will also cover topics including school finance, critical incident management, community relations, personnel, working with unions and many more.

To register, visit MyLearningPlan. Each session will require separate registration, and information will be sent out approximately six weeks prior to each session.

The remaining sessions will be held on December 7th, February 8th, April 12th, and June 7th.

The deadline to register for the first session is Wednesday, October 5. The program will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a continental breakfast provided.
