Q: What is your role as Deputy Superintendent at Questar III?
My role as Deputy Superintendent is to oversee all school improvement programs, Special Education, school improvement data analysis, supplementary educational services, Tech Valley High School, and many other programs. It is a role that encompasses the variety of services that Questar III provides.

Q: How do you see your role in supporting the BOCES and the school districts it supports?
It is my role to support and promote excellence in all aspects of Questar III. As an organization, Questar III has some of the most talented and dedicated professionals in the field of education. I am honored to be working with the BOCES to guide the component districts, and inform and support them in this ever-changing field. School districts are facing incredible challenges. They need support more than ever to achieve success. It is my goal to bring out the very best in everyone and provide continuous support to the entire Questar III staff and all component districts.

Q: What is your background like – previous jobs, your education, etc.?
My Educational background began in Buffalo New York, where I majored in History. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, I moved to Boston where I attended Suffolk University and Emmanuel College gaining two master’s degrees in Secondary Education and Educational Leadership. I have also had the opportunity to take a multitude of courses at Harvard University in data analysis, school improvement and academic interventions. Upon returning to New York I attended the College of St. Rose where I obtained my School District Leadership license.

My career as an educator began in Boston Public Schools as a history, English, and humanities teacher. I have taught in some of the most poverty stricken neighborhoods and learned a tremendous amount about the effects of socioeconomics and its relationship to education. Through my efforts I increased student scores on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Systems (MCAS). Early in my career I was selected to be part of Governor Deval Patrick’s Education Readiness Initiative where I worked with business leaders, community members and some of the most brilliant minds in education to prepare the state for the next evolution in the field of education. The work we conducted brought about significant change in schools across the state. In 2007, I became the director of the Advancement via Individual Education (AVID) program. AVID placed students in a rigorous academic setting with college tutors and programs that were routed in skill and inquiry based learning. In 2009, I was appointed Director of Academic Turnaround where I was responsible for the academic and assessment turnaround of a level IV priority school. With the first ever public/charter school partnership in Boston, I was able to hire an exceptional staff and provide unparalleled professional development support. The results showed a dramatic turnaround within the first year.

The following year, after the birth of my first daughter, I was hired as principal of Howard L. Goff Middle School in the East Greenbush Central School District. The four years I spent in East Greenbush were some of the most rewarding years in my career. I had the privilege of working with an exceptional staff and in the process raised the level of success in all aspects of the school.

Over the past nine years I have also had the opportunity to be an adjunct professor at Suffolk University in Boston and the College of Saint Rose in the department of Education. Being a professor not only allows me to shape the minds of incoming administrators and teachers, but also allows me to be on the cutting edge of changes in the field and work with talented individuals to make that change a reality.

Q: What do you like most about your job?
My career has always been focused around one ideology: the students. Whether I am in front of a class, leading a building or overseeing a region, the well-being of students and their individual success is the guiding principle that keeps me motivated and driven.

Q: Tell us a bit about your life outside of Questar III.
I am the father of two beautiful girls Avery (4) and Harper (2). I have been married for seven years to Lauren Sloane who is a physical therapist. Outside of school I enjoy cooking, being with my family and exercising.
